##### Chapter 1 - In Person

## Intro

- Introduce yourself (if necessary).
- Introduce the game (open in browser or hand them the steam deck).
- Confirm 30(ish) minutes is okay.
- Ask to record (if available).
- Clarify we're testing the game, not the player.
- Ask them to think aloud.
- Clarify that you won't be providing hints unless they really get stuck.
- Ask if they have any questions before starting.

"Hi, I'm [name], one of the designers of our upcoming game called [name]. Thanks for taking the time to test our game with us. The test should take less than 30 minutes, does that still work for you?

[If available] Is it okay if I record this session?

Before we start, I want to clarify that we're testing the game, not you as a player. It doesn't matter how good or bad you are at the game. If something is frustrating or doesn't make sense, we want to know so we can improve the design of [name]. With that in mind, please speak your mind while you play. Tell us what you're thinking, what's working, what's frustrating, reasons behind your decisions, etc.

I should also point out that I'm going to try to stay relatively quiet while you play since I don't want to bias your gameplay. So if I don't immediately answer you, that's why. I'm not trying to be rude. If you get really stuck, I can give you hints.

Do you have any questions before we get started?"

# Play Test

- Explain controls & ensure the player has all info they need to play.
- Observe them play and take notes on observation sheet (below).
- Do not provide help, tips, or hints. Just watch.
- If player is genuinely stuck for a long time, you may nudge them to help progress the test forward. If they are soft-locked, you can direct them to press R to restart the room.

[If on PC Browser]
"Open your browser and navigate to https://jottesen.itch.io/tethergeist-playtesting. Go ahead and click ploy. Sometimes you need to refresh the browser for it to work. The controls are your basic WASD where A is left and D is right. Space is jump, and J will be your special ability. You can also use the arrow keys with Z as your special button if you'd like."

[If on Steam Deck]
"Here you go. You can control your character with either the joystick or the d-pad here. Jump is this button, and your special ability will be this button."

"With that, I'll stop talking and you can go ahead and play. Remember to think aloud and that I'll be staying relatively quiet."

# Conclusion

Questionaire --> [https://forms.gle/JEsjPBM2btDL6NpH8]()

- Write down the completion time on the observation sheet.
- Let them know they've finished all the levels we're testing.
- Ask them to summarize their experience.
- Ask them the questions in the post-test questionnaire or give them a link to it. (If giving the link, ask them to either complete it now or really soon so they don't forget their experience).
- Ask if they have any last questions.
